Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 1, 2016) – Led by two early set wins, the Sewanee volleyball team defeated Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Rhodes 3-1, Saturday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers are now 8-6 overall while improving their record at home this season to 6-2.
Sewanee opened the contest with a 25-20 first-set victory. The Tigers then took the second set again at 25-20 before Rhodes edged Sewanee in the third, 25-18. The Tigers then rallied back to close the contest at 25-21.
A big key early for Sewanee was its strong attack percentage. The Tigers hit .333 in the first set and then converted .235 percent of their attacks in the second set.
Individually, middle blocker Elizabeth Gill led Sewanee on offense with 10 kills and a .269 attack. Senior Diamond Stewart and junior Caroline Owens were behind Gill with eight kills. The majority of those successful attacks came off the passes of Constance Connolly, who had 19 assists and 11 digs, and Anna Wilson, who finished with 15 assists and 13 digs.
Additionally, libero Sara Jayne Sutton had 20 digs while Kristy Gray finished with 10 stops.
Sewanee quickly returns to action with a noon match Sunday against No. 19 Hendrix.
