Box Score 2 MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Sept. 4, 2015) – The Sewanee volleyball team earned its first victory of the 2015 season Friday, as the Tigers split a pair of match against host Huntingdon and Belhaven.
The Tigers are now 1-2 this season. Sewanee opened the day with a 3-0 loss against Belhaven. However, in the nightcap, the Tigers responded with an impressive 3-2 win over the host Hawks.
In the opening match, Maggie Stanford led the attack with eight kills. Setter Walker Buxton finished with 23 assists while Caroline Owens (14), Diamond Stewart (10), and libero Sara Jayne Sutton (18) all finished with double-digit digs.
In the victory against the Hawks, Sewanee outlasted Huntingdon with a 22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 23-25, 15-9 win.
A big reason for the success in the second and third sets for Sewanee was the Tigers' ability to limit the attack of the Hawks. Sewanee's defense forced Huntingdon to hit -.049 in the second and .048 in the third. On offense, Sewanee found its grove with a .216 attack percentage in the third.
After the Hawks rallied to force the final fifth set, Sewanee did not quit. With the match at 3-3, Sewanee went on a 9-3 run. During that stretch, Stewart, Caroline Montgomery, Stanford, Lucy Riddle, and Owens all had kills.
After a timeout by the Hawks, Casey Hassett made the score 12-8 with a kill. That would set up three kills over the next four points by Stewart.
Overall, Stewart had a season-high 17 kills and 20 digs for a double-double. Montgomery stepped up with seven kills and four blocks from her middle position.
Additionally, Buxton pitched in 33 assists and 14 digs while Sutton (21), Owens (20), and Ellen Henthorn (12) all finished with double-digit digs.
Sewanee returns to action with a number of matches, Saturday.
