Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 1, 2015) – Despite winning the first set and then taking the final frame into extra points, the Sewanee volleyball team fell short in its season opener against Covenant losing to the visiting Scots 3-1.
The Tigers opened the match by winning the first set, 26-24. Unfortunately, Covenant answered back by winning the next two sets by scores of 25-15. In the final set, it looked like the Scots would roll like they did in the second and third when Sewanee answered back.
The Tigers rallied back with some key digs from freshman Peyton Parent, sophomore Ellen Moore, and junior Diamond Stewart. Sewanee used those chances as setter Walker Buxton, who led Sewanee with 31 assists, found senior Maggie Stanford and Stewart on multiple attacks.
Despite fighting off multiple match points and having a chance to close out the fourth, Sewanee could not get over the hump. After the Scots would back serve with a sideout, Covenant closed the contest when Ginny Moore blasted a shot off a pass from Schuyler Moore.
Overall, Stanford and Stewart led Sewanee with 13 kills each. In her first career match for the Tigers, Parent played well from her libero position with 33 digs.
Moore led Covenant with a match-high 17 kills to go along with 21 digs. Middle blocker Chelsea VanDyk also finished in double-digits for Covenant with 13 kills.
Sewanee, who hit .056, will now open the Huntingdon Jubilee Tournament in Montgomery, Ala., on Friday against Belhaven.
