Box Score LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. (Sept. 1, 2015) – Two early goals proved to be the difference, as host Covenant held on for a 2-1 opening-night win over the Sewanee men's soccer team at Scotland Yard.
After Sewanee took one shot after the start of the match, the Scots quickly answered back when Noah Wiersema blasted a shot home at the 1:47 mark.
The score would remain at 1-0 until 31:06 when Bryce Bartelt found the back of the net with a shot from 20 yards out.
Sewanee netted its only goal of the evening as Matt Hawse converted a penalty kick with 12 minutes remaining in the second half.
Even with the great start by Covenant, Sewanee's offense outshot the Scots by one, 10-9. The Tigers also held a slight edge in corners at 5-4.
Max Hawes led the offense with four shots while freshman Kyle Johnston added three. In goal freshman keeper Will Merriman finished with two saves.
The Tigers continue their early road schedule by traveling to Guilford for a 5:00 p.m. (EST) match on Saturday.
