ST. LOUIS, Mo. (May 9, 2015) – The No. 28 Sewanee men's tennis team dropped its 5-0 NCAA Tournament second-round match against No. 15 Whitman, Saturday, on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis.
Sewanee's season comes to a close at 16-6. Whitman improved to 22-5 and will play host and No. 5 Washington in the NCAA Regional Championship. Sewanee has now made the second round of the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons.
Whitman opened the contest by sweeping all three doubles matches. At No. 2, No. 9 Zach Hewlin and Jake Hoeger defeated Eric Roddy and Blake Wilde, 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, Petar Jivkov and Robert Carter topped Davis Owen and Scott Gallimore, 8-3.
Whitman then won at No. 1 as No. 17 Colton Malesovas and James Rivers outlasted Avery Schober and Connor Winkler, 8-5.
In singles action, Phillip Locklear defeated Winkler at No. 3 6-1, 6-1. Whitman then closed out the match as Chris Friedman won at No. 5 against Owen 6-2, 6-2.
