SEWANEE, Tenn. (May 12, 2015) – Sewanee swimming scholar-athlete Brian Glatt, C'15, has been awarded a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships are awarded to scholar-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletic competition.
"I'm extremely honored to have been chosen for this award," said Glatt. "I must thank my coaches, professors, and teammates for always motivating and supporting me during past four years."
Glatt truly embodied what it meant to be a successful scholar-athlete.
Over his career the Knoxville, Tenn., native was a three-time Southern Athletic Association (SAA) champion while earning 15 all-conference honors. A talented swimmer, Glatt posted three NCAA "B" Cut times while setting new school records in the 100 and 200 freestyle events.
Additionally, Glatt was part of the 200, 400, and 800 school-record setting freestyle relay teams.
Outside the pool, Glatt was a four-time All-SAA Academic performer and a multiple CSCAA Scholar Academic First-Team All-American. Glatt, who ranked among the highest in the Class of 2015, finished with a 4.01 grade point average (GPA) in biology.
He was also a member of the Order of Gownsmen, Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Epsilon Delta National Medical Society, and Order of Omega. Additionally, the George W. Ray Scholar earned the Barron-Cravens Cup and Bishop Juhan awards.
Glatt is the son of Lynn Barrett and Herbert J. Glatt.
Glatt becomes the first Sewanee swimmer to be awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship since Phillip Link and Sara Neil were named recipients in 2013. Under head coach Max Obermiller, Sewanee has been awarded six NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.
"Brian personifies what it is like to be a Sewanee scholar-athlete," said Obermiller. "His devotion to excellence is evident in all he does athletically and academically, and he also understands what it takes to be a great teammate and leader. The University cultivates this attitude to take advantage of all the great opportunities that Sewanee offers. Winning this award is a culmination of this collaborative spirit and needs to be shared with all the terrific students, athletes, and professors who helped facilitate this environment."
With 31 Postgraduate Scholarship recipients, Sewanee ranks among the nation's leading institutions in any NCAA division. Created in 1964, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships promote and encourage education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes. There are 29 male and 29 female student-athletes honored, with each receiving $7,500.
