Cooper clinches win for men's tennis team against No. 39 Christopher Newport

LEXINGTON, Va. (March 21, 2015) – After saving two match points and holding on for a 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles, senior Alex Cooper led the Sewanee men's tennis team to an impressive 5-4 win against No. 39 Christopher Newport, Saturday, in Lexington, Va.

The Tigers are now 8-4 overall.

Down in the final set 4-1, Cooper kept battling against Michael Dodd. Eventually, the local Baylor School product held off multiple match points and rallied for the win that clinched the victory.

Prior to the drama at No. 6, Sewanee rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles.

The Captains would extend their advantage to start singles as Justin Cerny won at No. 3 over Connor Winkler 6-0, 6-1. The Tigers then got a key point by Davis Owen when he retired Chiraag Shetty at No. 5.

Sewanee then tied the score at 3-3 as Avery Schober closed out a 6-4, 6-2 victory over David Reed at No. 1.

CNU would take back the lead at 4-3 after Steven Boslet topped Rand Jackson at No. 2, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

However, Sewanee kept fighting as Scott Gallimore earned a 7-5, 6-3 straight set win over Arttu Fiva at No. 4.

That set up the key final set by Cooper at No. 6.

Sewanee quickly returns to action with a 9:00 a.m. match at rival No. 36 Washington & Lee, Sunday.
