CLAREMONT, Calif. (March 17, 2015) – Facing another ranked team for the fourth straight day, the Sewanee men's tennis team bounced back with a strong 6-3 win over No. 28 Denison, Tuesday, in Claremont, California.
The Tigers are now 6-4 overall.
Sewanee opened by sweeping all three doubles matches. At No. 1 Eric Roddy and Alex Cooper defeated Grant Veitman and Casey Cempre, 8-4 At No. 2 Avery Schober and Connor Winkler topped Jackson O'GormanBean and Jeffrey LoDuca by another 8-4 win.
The Tigers completed their early 3-0 lead when Rand Jackson and Scott Gallimore hammered Owen Smith and Grant MacPherson at No. 3, 8-2.
In singles action Schober had little trouble with Veltman at No. 1 singles winning 6-3, 6-1. In fact using his powerful forehand, Schober's win clintched the match for Sewanee with the score at 5-0.
Prior to that win, Roddy got the Tigers on the board in singles when he worked past Cempre at No. 2 by two 6-2 set wins.
The Tigers' final win came at No. 4 as Winkler outlasted Jack O'Koniewski 6-4, 1-6, 13-11. After spliting the first two sets, Winkler found himself down at match point at 12-10. However, fighting for each shot, Winkler rallied for the 13-11 come-from-behind victory in the final set.
Sewanee continues its season out west with a 9:00 a.m. (PST) match against Salisbury.
