Box Score 2 ATLANTA (Sept. 28, 2014) – The Sewanee volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Oglethorpe and against No. 3 Emory, Sunday.
Early in the afternoon, the Tigers lost a thrilling and close five-set contest against OU 25-10, 24-26, 25-19, 21-25, and 15-12. Then, in the nightcap, Sewanee lost to the nationally-ranked Eagles 25-14, 25-12, 25-13.
Against the Stormy Petrels, Diamond Stewart and Jamie Sue Wilson each finished with 15 kills. Most of those attacks came off passes from Rachel Schuman and Walker Buxton. Schuman finished with 14 assists while Buxton pitched in 13.
On defense, Sewanee finished with its highest number of players in double-digit digs this season. Libero Sara Jayne Sutton led the way with a 24 stops. Additionally, Schuman added a season-high 18 digs while Wilson added 16. Buxton also stopped 13 attacks while Stewart added 10 digs.
In the match against Emory, the Eagles showed why their one of the favorites to win the NCAA Division III National Championship. Emory, who finished in the final four last season and has a 17-2 record this fall, hit .369 while limiting Sewanee's attack to -.011.
The Tigers return to action with a 10:30 a.m., match at Birmingham-Southern next Saturday.
