Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 13, 2014) – The Sewanee softball team earned its first win of the season Thursday as the Tigers split a pair of games against regional-rival Covenant at Tiger Field.

Sewanee opened the doubleheader with a thrilling 12-11 win in extra innings while the Scots won the nightcap, 23-6.

Game 1

In the opener, Sewanee got on the board first when Kate Heil and Sara Burklin drove in back-to-back runs.

The Tigers would then add another run in the bottom of the fourth, when Grace Cobbs scored Heil with a slap bunt.

Eventually, Covenant would rally. The Scots scored two runs in the top of the fifth and six runs in the top of the sixth.

Down 8-3, the Tigers need some offense in the bottom of the sixth. After back-to-back singles from Heil and Courtney Saunders, Cobbs loaded the bases with a no out walk.

A batter later, Gabby Sanders ripped an RBI single that scored Heil. After Sewanee plated another run on a Covenant error, Kali Ousley ripped an RBI single.

Two batters later, Sarah Fleming capped off the inning with another RBI single that scored Michelle Thibodeaux.

After Covenant sent the game into extra innings with a run in the top of the seventh, the Scots would score two more runs on two hits in the top of the eighth.

Needing to rally one more time, Sewanee came through. Consecutive RBI singles by Fleming and Saunders led the Tigers to a three-run walk-off win.

Sewanee finished the game with a season-high 14 hits and 12 runs.

Individually, Fleming, Tori Haugvoll, Saunders, Burklin, Sanders, and Ousley each finished with two hits.

On the mound, Thibodeaux earned her first win this season after striking out three the complete game.

Game 2

In the second game, the Tigers were down only 4-2 heading into the fifth inning. However, the Scots exploded for 19 runs over the final two innings.

Sewanee was led at the plate by Haugvoll, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Saunders also played well with a 1-for-3 effort and a pair of RBI.

Sewanee will now take a week off before returning to action at Judson, March 20.
