Scoring runs push Birmingham-Southern past Sewanee

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 16, 2014) – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern rallied from a slow start to down the Sewanee women's basketball team for a 66-56 win, Sunday, inside Bill Battle Coliseum.

The Panthers used a 13-0 run midway through the first half to take control of the game. Prior to that spurt, it was Sewanee that was the hot offensive team. The Tigers started the game on 13-3 run.

During that stretch, Kayla Sewell, Savannah Rose, Casey Hassett and Jamie Chauvin all scored. In fact, Sewanee forced six turnovers and had two blocks through the first four minutes.

Unfortunately, after the Panthers bounced back, BSC would take a 31-29 lead into halftime.

Out of the locker room, Birmingham-Southern used another 13-0 run to start the second half. With that, BSC's lead grew to as much as 15, 44-29, with 16:24 remaining.

A jumper by Sewell and back-to-back shots from Hassett slowed the BSC run over the next three minutes. However, like they did throughout the contest, the Panthers answered back with another big offensive rally.

Overall, Sewanee made 30.3 percent of its attempts. The Tigers also made a season-high 93.8 percent of their free-throw shots.

Individually, Hasset led the Tigers with a game-high 17 points. Fellow forward Sewell also scored in double figures with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Guard Elizabeth Bromirski led three BSC players in double figures, with a team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds.

With all their SAA regular season road games over, the Tigers return home for a 6:00 p.m. contest against rival Rhodes Friday.
