Box Score JACKSON, Miss. (Oct. 5, 2014) – Despite its best effort, the Sewanee volleyball team fell just short at Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Millsaps, Sunday, losing to the host Majors 3-2 inside the Hangar Dome.
After losing the first two sets, Sewanee battled back in the next two. Millsaps, who is 15-1 overall and 6-1 in league action, allowed the Tigers to go on an 11-3 run to close out the third set. With that, Sewanee stayed alive with a 25-22 win.
The Tigers then closed out the fourth set on a 6-1 run to take the frame 25-20.
In the deciding fifth-set tiebreaker, Millsaps jumped in front early behind the outstanding serve of Caroline McKey. The Majors then used their advantage to close out the set and match at 15-7.
Overall, Sewanee (5-13, 1-6 SAA) hit .063 with 36 kills on 190 total attacks.
Individually, sophomore outside hitter Diamond Stewart led the offense with a team-high 15 kills. Senior Jamie Sue Wilson also finished in double digit kills with 13. Setters Walker Buxton added a team-high 16 assists while senior Rachel Schuman pitched in 12.
On defense, four Tigers finished with double-digit digs. Libero Sara Jayne Sutton had a match-high 37 stops while Stewart (17), Schuman (14), and Buxton (13) also reached double-digits.
Finally, middle blocker Casey Hassett finished with six block assists while Lucy Riddle added four.
Sewanee will play four out of its next five matches inside Juhan Gymnasium. The Tigers open their homestand with a 3:00 p.m. contest against Berry, Saturday.
