Sewanee falls at Centre in SAA opener

Box Score

DANVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 4, 2014) – A strong defense by Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre helped the host Colonels down the Sewanee women's basketball team, 67-34, Saturday, inside Alumni Gymnasium.

Centre opened the game by jumping out to a 13-0 lead. After sophomore Jamie Chauvin finally got Sewanee on the board with a jumper at the 11:12 mark, the Colonels used another run to built a 33-12 halftime lead.

Out of the locker room, the Colonels opened the second half on a 10-0 spurt that hampered any chance of a Tiger comeback.

Overall, Centre made 38 percent of its attempts while limiting the Tigers to a 28.3 field goal percentage. Sewanee was also undone by 31 turnovers.

Individually, junior Kayla Sewell led the Tigers with seven points. Fellow forward Casey Hassett scored four points while grabbing 13 rebounds.

For the Colonels, forward Paige Beachle led all scorers with a game-high 19 points. Beachle also added seven rebounds and seven steals.

Guard Maggie Hartlage also finished in double figures with 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

Sewanee continues conference play as the Tigers host Birmingham-Southern, January 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
