Box Score Sewanee, Tenn. (Jan. 18, 2014) – Despite an outstanding effort, the Sewanee women's basketball team could not hold on against Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre, Saturday. The Colonels used a late second-half scoring run to pull away, 63-52, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
In the first half, the Tigers were outstanding on offense. Sewanee made 47.8 percent of its attempts en route to a 31-29 halftime lead.
After the opening four minutes of play, the Tigers took their first lead when Paige Lowe made a three pointer.
Two possessions later, Lowe connected a jumper with 13:39 to go. That make started a 7-2 Sewanee run over the next five minutes.
Centre then answered with a 12-7 run to pull within three, 22-19, with 6:06 left in the first half.
After another Lowe jumper, Savannah Rose then connected on her first three of the game which pushed Sewanee ahead, 25-19.
The Tigers then took their largest lead of the game when Lowe made another jumper 30 seconds later.
From there, Centre closed the half on a 10-4 run.
Out of the locker room, Centre took its first lead since early in the first half when Paige Baechle scored on back-to-back possessions.
Over the next 10 minutes neither team would lead by more than four points.
After two three throws by Lowe, Centre finally started to pull away. Two threes by Maggie Hartlage and one by Alexis Guy pushed the Colonel lead to 54-46 with 6:28 remaining.
Centre then scored five additional points when Baechle made two jumpers and a free throw.
Overall, Sewanee finished with a 33.3 field goal percentage while Centre made 40 percent of its attempts.
The Tigers were undone by a 4-of-22 effort in the second half. Despite that, their were five ties and 13 lead changes in the game.
Individually, Lowe led all scorers with a season-high 23 points. She was joined in double figures by Jamie Chauvin, who added 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Baechle led Centre with a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double. Guard Maggie Hartlage also played well for the Colonels with 16 points.
With its four-game homestand finished, the Tigers will return to action on Friday, January 24 at Berry College. That game is scheduled to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. (EST).
