Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 29, 2013) – Despite fighting hard, the Sewanee volleyball team fell just short Sunday as Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern outlasted the Tigers, 3-2, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
After BSC opened with a close 27-25 first-set victory, the Tigers stormed back in the second by a score of 25-16. In that set, Sewanee finished with a .579 attack percentage.
After another set win by BSC, Sewanee forced a fifth set by winning the fourth 25-20.
In the final set, BSC opened with a quick lead, however kills by Jamie Sue Wilson and Diamond Stewart tied the score at 5-5.
Unfortunately, BSC won three straight points to take control en route to a final 15-10 set victory.
Overall, both teams were close statistically. BSC finished with a .256 attack percentage while Sewanee hit .298.
Individually, Wilson finished with 15 kills while Stewart added 12. Additionally, Kayla Sewell added eight kills on 14 total attacks for a .571 attack percentage.
Also on offense, setter Rachel Schuman finished with a season-high 28 assists. Fellow setter Walker Buxton also added 15 assists.
On defense, libero Jamie Kosman finished with a match-high 19 digs while Caroline Montgomery, Sewell, Wilson, and Lucy Riddle all had multiple blocks.
BSC was led by outside hitter Alex Bothe, whom connected for a match-high 27 kills.
After three straight losses, Sewanee will look to get back on track with a 11:00 a.m., match against Hendrix October 5th.
