Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio (Aug. 30, 2013) – The Sewanee men's soccer team opened its 2013 season with a 1-1 tie against Case Western Reserve Friday night at the Labor Day Cup in Granville, Ohio.
Despite a first-half goal by both teams, neither squad could break through the remaining minutes of regulation or both overtime periods.
Case Western Reserve got on the board first, as Chris Cvecko fired in a shot from just outside the 18 with 10:20 off the clock.
As play moved forward, Sewanee kept fighting. With 18 minutes left until intermission, junior Ford Emerson tied the match with a header off a beautifully placed corner kick from teammate Ford Rushton.
After the equalizer, Sewanee kept on the attack with 11 more shots, including four attempts on-goal.
As a team, the Tigers finished with 15 shots and eight corner kicks.
Individually, Emerson led the offense with four shots, while Walker Ueland, Chris Haberstroh, and Griffin Smith fired two attempts each.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Derek Williams earned the tie after he finished with four saves in 47 minutes of action. Additionally, sophomore Jacob Zalewski stopped three attempts in 62 minutes between the pipes.
Sewanee will quickly return to action with a 6:00 p.m. (EST) contest against host Denison, Saturday.
