Box Score 2 SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 7, 2013) – Despite a strong offensive performance by Sarah Anne Hamilton, the Sewanee softball team dropped a pair of Southern Athletic Association (SAA) games to rival Rhodes Sunday.
Hamilton blasted her first homerun of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers fell to the Lynx 10-2 in the first game of the Sunday afternoon doubleheader.
Hamilton's homer, a solo shot to center field in the bottom of the first inning, made the score 3-1.
The Tigers cut the Rhodes' lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Kayla Sewell scored on a ground out by Michelle Thibodeaux. Sewell led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second when Sarah Burklin reached on an error by the Lynx shortstop. Both Sewell and Burklin move up a base on a passed ball. Thibodeaux then sent a sharp grounder to the Lynx shortstop chasing Sewell home from third base.
Sewell and Sarah Fleming each had two hits to lead the Tigers.
Freshman Cooper Killen suffered the loss in the circle for the Tigers.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Rhodes exploded for eleven runs in the top of the fifth inning and cruised to the 18-0 win.
Fleming was a perfect two-for-two at the plate for Sewanee, while Hamilton also chipped in two hits.
Hamilton was the losing pitcher in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
With the losses Sewanee drops to 5-17 overall and 0-16 in SAA play.
The Tigers will next be in action on Tuesday, April 9 when they host Rust College. A doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
