SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 16, 2013) – The Sewanee men's tennis team opened its 2013 season with an impressive 6-3 win over regional foe Martin Methodist, Saturday, on the Guerry Tennis Courts inside the Fowler Athletic Center.
After losses at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions, Grant Hopkins and Eric Roddy gave Sewanee its first point of the day when they defeated Daniel Emirian and Farith Lozano at No. 3.
As singles started, the Tigers and Redhawks split the first two matches.
Down 3-2, the Tigers rallied. Sean Laughlin began the comeback when he outlasted Alvaro Morcillo at No. 2 in a long 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 match.
Later on, Connor Winkler and Levi Joy pushed the Tigers in front with victories at No. 4 and No. 5.
Finally, Grant Hopkins closed out the match when he defeated Lozano at the No. 6 position 7-5, 7-5.
Sewanee returns to action Thursday, when the Tigers take on Washington & Lee in Chattanooga, Tenn. That match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m., (EST).
