Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 5, 2013) – A double-double by junior Kayla Sewell helped the Sewanee volleyball team past Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Hendrix, 3-2, Saturday at Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers (11-8, 2-4 SAA) opened the match by winning the first two sets 25-20 and 25-16. Just when it looked like Sewanee would sweep the Warriors, Hendrix responded. The Warriors won the third and fourth sets 25-22 and 25-14.
In the final frame, neither team would lead by more than a point until Sewanee took at 11-9 advantage off an attack error by Zoe Calhoun.
Hendrix would rally with four of the next five points to lead, 13-12. With their backs against the wall, Sewanee tied the match with a kill by Sewell.
On the ensuing play, Jamie Sue Wilson and Caroline Montgomery had a key block that gave Sewanee its first match point. After a serve by Sewell, Hendrix's Jill Sikes had an error on a set attempt which closed out the match.
Overall, Sewanee tied its season-high mark in kills. The Tigers finished with 56 kills while Hendrix scored on 52 attempts.
Individually, Sewell led the attack with a season-high 19 kills and 15 digs. Saturday marked her first double-double of the season.
Additionally, Wilson posted 12 kills while Jamie Kosman added 12 digs.
Outside hitter Katie Burchfield led Hendrix with 13 kills on 37 attacks.
The Tigers will quickly return to action when Sewanee host rival Rhodes at 1:00 p.m., Sunday.
