Sewanee falls in a close match against Centre

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 16, 2013) – Despite almost forcing a pivotal fifth set, the Sewanee volleyball team loss a close 3-1 decision against Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre, Wednesday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

With the loss, Sewanee fell to 13-8 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

After Centre won the first set by a 25-21 score, the Tigers rebounded in the second behind their strong defense. Sewanee evened the match at 1-1 by winning the second set, 25-21.

Unfortunately, the Colonels again found their offense in the third, winning the frame 25-15 behind a .256 attack percentage.

In the final set, Centre took an early 8-3 lead behind kills by Lydia Prevost and Suzanne Asbury. However, Sewanee rallied over the next 10 minutes.

During that stretch, the Tigers eventually pulled to within two points, 15-13, when Kayla Sewell and Jamie Sue Wilson blocked an attack by Prevost.

As both teams played deeper into the set, Sewanee finally took its first lead at 23-22. After two points by Centre, the Tigers fought off the Colonels' first match-point with a kill by freshman Diamond Stewart.

After a kill by sophomore Lucy Riddle, Sewanee found itself with its first set-point at 25-24. However, Centre rallied with two straight points.

The Colonels would again try to close out the match, this time with the score at 26-25, however Abbigale Jacobi had an attack error that kept Sewanee alive.

Unfortuantley, the setback by the Colonels was short lived as Centre closed out the match two points later after an attack error by Sewanee and a block by Catherine Janszen and Asbury.

Individually, Sewanee was led on offense by Stewart, who finished with 15 kills. Riddle also played well with a season-high 13 kills.

Junior setter Rachel Schuman finished with 26 assists while Sewell and freshman Kristy Gray added 20 digs each.

Sewanee returns to action at Millsaps, Saturday. That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Jackson, Miss. Saturday also marks the first time Sewanee has played away from Juhan Gymnasium since Sept. 25.
