Rhodes uses strong offense to down Sewanee and retain the Orgill Trophy

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 12, 2013) – Rhodes quarterback Blake Box finished with 239 passing yards and four touchdowns, as the Lynx retained the Orgill Trophy with a 50-23 win against the Sewanee football team, Saturday, at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.

After Sewanee jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Rhodes quickly answered with a 74-yard touchdown run by Dane Wilson.

After Sewanee failed to move the ball on its next possession, the Lynx added their second touchdown when Charles Schneider caught a 15-yard pass from Box.

Another Callum Wishart field goal cut the lead to 14-6, however Rhodes scored on its next possession when Box found Jonathan Wiener for a 73-yard touchdown pass.

Sewanee would climb back into the game in the second quarter.

After a third field goal by Wishart, the Tigers scored their first touchdown when Charlie Powell hauled in a 59-yard pass from senior quarterback Curtis Johnson with 2:45 left before halftime.

Unfortunately, from there, things would not improve. Rhodes came out in the third quarter and scored 21 unanswered points to take a commanding 42-16 lead.

Powell would score one final touchdown for Sewanee, when Johnson found the junior receiver in the end zone with 14 seconds left in the third quarter.

Rhodes also added a late touchdown by tailback Kevin Vieira from five yards out.

Individually, Johnson finished with 153 yards of total offense and two touchdowns. Powell also played well with a career-high 83 receiving yards and two scores. 

Additionally, Wishart connected on three field goals from 43, 46, and 46-yards.

Joining Box was Vierira, who finished with 141 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Overall, Rhodes finished with 560 yards of total offense.

Rhodes also scored the most points in the long-time series since 1906.

The Tigers will look to rebound with a 1:30 p.m. (EST) game next Saturday at Centre.
