Maryville rallies for a 2-1 win over Sewanee

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 16, 2012) – Despite an early goal by Ford Emerson, the Sewanee men's soccer team could not hold on to its lead, as Maryville rallied for a 2-1 victory Sunday.

Sewanee got on the board late in the first half, when Emerson took a pass from Nate Owens and converted his second goal this season.

After Maryville tied the contest at 1-1 with 15 minutes left, the Scots' Danny Sassano scored the game winner with just under seven minutes to play.

"I am not concerned with the result, because I am happy with how we played," said head coach David Poggi. "We deserved a better result, but were unlucky. We gave up a goal late in the game after Rushton came off with an injury. We lost possession in our half and as Brian Maloney was trying to clear it out of danger, he inadvertently redirected the ball into our goal. Maryville's second goal was off a ball crossed to the back post. Sylar Holmes was unable to clear."

Despite only one goal, Sewanee finished the afternoon with 11 shots and three corner kicks.

Individually, senior forward Samuel Edoung-Biyo led the attack with four attempts.

"In the last five minutes be pushed for overtime by being a bit more direct," said Poggi. "It almost worked a couple of times. The team battled all the way to the final whistle and we will take away a lot from this game."

After six straight road matches to start this season, Sewanee will finally have its home opener against LaGrange Friday night. That match is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., at Puett Field.
