Tigers earn first conference win since 2006, defeat Oglethorpe 3-1

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 15, 2012) – The Sewanee volleyball team earned its first conference win since the 2006 season, as the Tigers defeated Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Oglethorpe 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-18), Saturday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

After losing the first set 25-19, Sewanee roared back in the second set. Tied 11-11, Sewanee took three out of the next four points with strong defensive plays. During that period, Sewanee had blocks by Kayla Sewell and Jamie Sue Wilson. Later on, up 23-19, the Tigers closed the set when Oglethorpe had back-to-back offensive attack errors.

In the third set, Sewanee's offense dominated. The Tigers jumped out to a quick 10-6 lead. After a timeout by Oglethorpe, Sewanee stayed strong. An 11-4 run gave the Tigers a 22-10 advantage, before the Stormy Petrels called another timeout. Like the first timeout, Sewanee came out of the break firing. A kill by Lucy Riddle, and two by Wilson, closed the set at 25-10.

In the final set, the score stayed close until Sewanee pulled ahead with a mini run at 17-14. Oglethorpe briefly slowed Sewanee with a block by Ashley Haislip. Despite the temporary setback, Sewanee finished strong as Wilson served consecutive aces to win the set and match, 25-18.

Overall, the Tigers were led by a balanced offensive attack. Wilson led Sewanee with eight kills and 14 digs. She was joined by Sewell (six kills, 13 digs), Riddle (six kills, six digs), and Maggie Stanford (three kills, 10 digs). Additionally, Caroline Montgomery, who sparked the third set rally, finished with seven kills and five blocks.

The Tigers continue their three-match homestand against Centre College, Tuesday. That contest is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., inside Juhan Gymnasium.
