SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 15, 2012) – The Centre Colonels defeated the Sewanee Tigers in both ends of an afternoon doubleheader today to complete the weekend sweep of a four-game SCAC softball series. The Colonels shut out the Tigers 10-0 in the opener and took the second game 12-5.
In the first game the Tigers managed only two hits in the 10-0 loss. Kayla Sewell and Claire Knepshield each punched out a single.
Sarah Anne Hamilton suffered the loss in the circle for Sewanee.
In the final game of the weekend, the Colonels jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
The Tigers closed the gap to 5-2 in the home half of the third inning. With one out Carly Warfield doubled to right centerfield. Sewell reached first base on an error by the Centre shortstop with Warfield advancing to third base. Hamilton grounded out to second base scoring Warfield with the Tigers first run of the game. Michelle Thibodeaux then lined a double in the gap in left field chasing home Sewell.
Centre scored seven unanswered runs to take a 12-2 lead after the visitor's half of the sixth inning.
The Tigers scored three times in the bottom of the sixth. Knepshield coaxed a one-out walk. After Kali Ousley singled moving Knepshield to second base, Warfield followed with a single loading the bases. Sewell then ripped a two-out double plating Knepsheild and Ousley. Hamilton's single scored Warfield making the score 12-5 and rounding out the scoring for Sewanee on the day.
Warfield, Sewell, Hamilton and Thibodeaux led the Sewanee ten-hit attack with two hits each. Sewell and Hamilton each had two RBI.
Hamilton was the losing pitcher in the second game.
The Tigers drop to 5-18 overall and 0-12 in SCAC play.
Sewanee will wrap up the 2012 season next weekend when it hosts Birmingham Southern College in a four-game SCAC series. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
