SEWANEE, Tenn. 3/10/12 – The Agnes Scott Scotties swept an afternoon doubleheader from the Sewanee Tigers today in Sewanee. The Tigers fell 15-5 in the first game and 15-6 in the nightcap.
With the losses the Tigers drop to 1-6 on the season.
Agnes Scott jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over the Tigers after the visitor's half of the third inning.
In the bottom of the third, Sewanee put two runs on the scoreboard to cut the Scotties' lead in half at 4-2.
Grace Cobbs drew a two-out walk and
Kayla Sewell doubled to left centerfield. Sarah Hamilton then singled driving home Cobbs and Sewell.
The Scotties exploded for eight runs in the top of the fourth inning and added three more runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 15-2.
Sewanee picked up three runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score 15-5.
Hamilton suffered the loss for the Tigers in Game 1.
Sewell, Cobbs and
Codi Ellis each had two hits in the game. Hamilton and
Carly Warfield chipped in one hit apiece.
In the second game of the afternoon, Agnes Scott scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Sewanee responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score at 2-2 on Sewell's two-run homerun. Sewell's homer, a line drive over the left field fence, was her fourth of the season.
The Scotties put together a big inning in the top of the third when they scored seven runs to take a 10-2 lead.
Sewanee again cut into the Scotties' lead with three in the bottom of the frame to make the score 10-5. The inning was highlighted by a two-out RBI single by Warfield.
Agnes Scott added two runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth.
The Tigers managed only on more run in the bottom of the fifth inning on another RBI single by Warfield.
Hamilton was again charged with the loss in the circle for Sewanee.
Warfield finished the game with a perfect 3-for-3 effort at the plate. Sewell picked up two hits in the second game.
Sewanee will return to action in two weeks when they open SCAC play on Saturday, March 24 with a four-game series against Rhodes College in Memphis. Tenn.
