BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 4, 2012) – The Sewanee swimming and diving teams continued their impressive season with a number of outstanding finishes at Union College (Ky.), Saturday.
Both teams earned wins over NAIA ranked Union and King College inside the Stivers Aquatic Center. On the men's side, Sewanee defeated No. 6 Union, 72-57, and earned a, 104-24, victory against King. The women's squad then defeated No. 4 Union, 66-59, and King by a 91-28 decision.
With that, the two Sewanee teams finished their regular season with a 7-1dual meet record. Additionally, the Tigers earned wins in the previous 12-team Sewanee Invitational and the Union Fall Invitational.
Men's Recap
Having not lost since last October, the Tigers opened with strong performances in the relays.
Sewanee earned a quick victory in the 200 individually medley relay, when
Marcus Rochelle,
Phillip Link,
Jaime de la Fuente, and
Brian Glatt finished with a time of 1:37.40. In the second relay, Sewanee continued its win streak when De la Fuente, Glatt,
Courtland Day, and
Anthony Caskey won the 200 free race, in a blistering 1:28.19.
In the individual events, Link earned a win in the 500 free when he touched the wall at the 4:58.34 mark.
John Richards then added to the Tiger advantage, when he won the 400 IM in 4:28.75.
Moments later, Sewanee continued its dominances when Glatt finished first in the 200 free, with a quick time of 1:45.06. Day then continued the wins with a first place finish in the 50 breaststroke (27.67).
Finally, freshman
Joseph Scotese took first on the springboard with an 11-dive total of 237.82.
Women's Recap
Led by sophomore Astrid Escobar, the Tigers set a number of top times, Saturday.
As a team, the Tigers' relay squad duplicated the men's success when Escobar, Haley Shepherd, Sara Neil, and Katie Wakefield won the 200 individual medley, with a time of 1:55.29.
The Tigers continued to add to their total, when Escobar won her first individual race; the 100 breaststroke. Escobar touched the wall in 1:06.27, which broke the previous school record and was an NCAA B cut time.
Later in the meet, Escobar would get two more victories. The Panama City, Florida native won the 200 free (2:05.17) and the 400 IM (4:54.00).
Rounding out the wins was Shepherd. The junior closed out the 50 breaststroke in a quick 34.66 seconds.
On the diving board, Abigail Nebb had a career day. Nebb finished with a career-high 414.52 total. With that, Nebb's total was high enough for an NCAA qualifying mark. Additionally, Nebb's total broke Mackenzie Johnson's previous one-meter school record by 26 points. That record was previously set back in 1996.
The Tigers will now take a week off, before heading to the 2012 SCAC Championships. That meet will begin on February 15, in Dallas, Texas.
