SEWANEE, Tenn. (September 2, 2011) – The Sewanee Tigers opened the 2011 volleyball season with a pair of impressive victories today at Juhan Gymnasium. The Tigers picked up straight set wins over Fisk University and Andrew College.
“Today was a great start to our 2011 season,” according to Sewanee head coach Jessica Cortese. “I saw a lot of solid play from the upperclassmen as well as the freshman. We got some big points due to hustle plays on defense, which was encouraging for a group with so many new faces. Overall, I was very pleased with the effort and energy the entire team put forth. They worked hard in preseason and deserved to put two wins in the record books.”
In the first match of the day Sewanee defeated Fisk University 3-0 (25-7, 25-23, 25-10).
Freshman
Jamie Sue Wilson paced the Tigers with six kills, while
Erin Brahm led the way with five assists.
Rachel Schuman had four service aces, while
Nicole Klug led the way with eight digs.
Tarver Shimek and Wilson recorded a team-high three blocks each in the win.
In their second match of the day the Tigers swept Andrew College 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-13).
The Tigers were led in kills by freshman
Kayla Sewell. Brahm again paced the Tigers with ten assists. Wilson and Sewell chipped in four service aces each while Sewell had 13 digs and four blocks to lead the team.
Sewanee begins the season with a 2-0 record, matching their win total during the 2010 season, and will return to action tomorrow as they host Pensacola Christian College at 10:00 am and Rust College at 2:00 pm.
