Final Statistics: Sewanee at No. 19 W&L
LEXINGTON, Va. (Sept. 10, 2011) – Three early scores proved to be the difference, as No. 19 Washington and Lee outlasted Sewanee, 31-14, Saturday at Wilson Field in Lexington, Va.
With the loss the Tigers evened their record to 1-1, while the ranked Generals improved to 2-0.
Washington and Lee opened the scores late in the first quarter, as running back Sasha Vandalov scampered 16 yards to put the Generals up 7-0.
W&L then added to its advantage, as quarterback Charlie Westfal founded receiver Cody Davis for a 27-yard score with 4:11 to go in the second quarter. Unfortunately, for the Tigers, the Generals were not done as the W&L offense added a field goal late in the half.
As second half played opened, senior running back
Ben Cleveland helped pull Sewanee within 10 points, as he found the endzone from eight yards.
The Tigers' mometumn was shorted lived, as the Generals added two more touchdowns in the half. Sewanee sophomore quarterback
Lee Schurlknight added his second TD of the season - from one yard out - for the final 31-14 score.
Individually, Cleveland led the Tiger offense with nine carriers for 73 yards while senior defensive back
Alfonza Knight tallied a game-high 11 tackles.
For the Generals, Westfal continued his outstanding play after he posted 191 yards of total offense and three touchdowns.
Sewanee will continue its two-game road trip with 3:00 p.m contest at Pudget Sound September 17
, in Tacoma, Washington.
