SCAC rivals Oglethorpe University and Sewanee took to the tennis courts Friday for a men's tennis battle and the host Stormy Petrels walked away with a hard-fought 6-3 victory.
Sewanee got a pair of points in the singles competition after winning a point at \#2 doubles. In the doubles competition, Philip Kuntz (Atlanta, Ga., Dunwoody) and Levi Joy (Brock, Texas, Brock High School) took out Oglethorpe's Sandy Christofferson and Alex Biffle, 8-5. The Petrels picked up a win at \#1 doubles, as Ross Beall and Felix Mann handed Jay Hill (Greenville, S.C., Southside) and Grant Hopkins (Memphis, Tenn., Memphis University School) a 9-8 (6) loss. Oglethorpe also won at \#3 doubles, as Ethan Motz and Bryan Bailey edged out Sewanee's Oliver Crawford (Charleston, W. Va., George Washington High School) and Will Holloway (Augusta, Ga., Lakeside), 8-4.
Crawford picked up a win for the Tigers at \#6 singles after defeating Rajiv Dinakaran, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Hopkins also earned a point at \#2 singles when Beall retired due to injury. Hopkins had won his first set, 6-4, before falling in his second set, 6-0. Oglethorpe also got wins at \#1, \#3, \#4, and \#5 singles on their way to the 6-3 team victory.
The loss drops the Tigers to 8-5 on the season. They face SCAC foes Centre and Hendrix Colleges Saturday in Atlanta.
