The Sewanee men's tennis team split its' pair of Saturday matches in California, defeating Cal Tech, 8-1, in the morning before falling to Whittier, 8-1, in the afternoon. With the split, the Tigers move to 5-4 on the season.
Playing against Cal Tech in the first match of the day, Sewanee picked up two of the three doubles' matches before sweeping singles' play. Jay Hill and Levi Joy turned in the Tigers' only defeat of the match, losing 9-8 (7-3) to Cal Tech's Tosh and Mernich in the \#1 slot. Phil Kuntz and Will Holloway teamed up to win at \#2 doubles, topping Runkel and Ayarwal, 8-2. Grant Hopkins and Oliver Crawford teamed up to take home a point at \#3 doubles, defeating the Beavers' Lieber and Harsiamham, 8-4.
The Tigers blanked the Beavers in singles' play, starting with a Jay Hill victory at \#1 singles. Hill topped Toshi, 6-4, 7-5, before Hopkins picked up a point in the \#2 slot, 6-2, 7-6. Joy defeated Yu at \#3 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2, while Kuntz grabbed a 6-0, 6-3 win over Lieber at the four-spot. Holloway won at \#4 singles, beating Runkel, 6-3, 6-1, and Crawford finished out the Tiger win, beating the Beavers' Shen, 6-0, 6-1.
In the second match of the day, the Tigers' ran into a buzz saw, falling 8-1 to \#26 Whittier. Will Holloway picked up Sewanee's only point of the match at \#5 singles. Holloway defeated Whittier's Perez, 6-3, 6-2.
Hill and Joy teamed up again at the \#1 doubles spot and fell to Seneviratve and Carreaha, 8-4, before Kuntz and Holloway lost to Hansen and Schoumer at \#2 doubles, 8-1. Hopkins and Crawford also lost, falling to the Poets' Sun and Pollare, 8-6.
Seneviratve topped Hill at \#1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2, while the Poets' Carreaha took out Hopkins in the two slot, winning 6-3, 6-0. Levi Joy fell at \#3 singles, 1-6, 6-4, 10-3, to Whittiers' Schoumer. The Poets' got a win at \#4 singles when Hansen dropped Phil Kuntz, 6-3, 6-2. Sun finished up the Whittier attack, topping Sewanee's Robbie Bland, 6-2, 6-2, in the \#6 spot.
The Tigers will face the University of Puget Sound Monday at 10:00 a.m. in Los Angeles.
