BIRMINGHAM, Ala. 9/4/10 – The Sewanee Tigers fell to Rust College and Mississippi College in volleyball action today at Birmingham Southern College.
Sewanee lost to Rust in the first match of the day in four games (25-16, 20-25, 20-25, 23-25).
In the first game, Sewanee jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Rust aided by a run of three services aces by Erin Brahm (Huntsville, Ala., Grissom). The Tigers played well throughout the game closing out the win with eleven straight service points by Liz Boddiford (Forest Hill, Md., Maryvale Prep).
The Tigers got behind early in Game 2 and could not regain the momentum. Rust swept the next three games for the 3-1 victory.
Boddiford led Sewanee with nine kills, followed closely by Kim Conkell (Atlanta, Ga, Lakeside) with eight. Brahm chipped in 18 assists, three aces and nine digs. Adrienne Borchardt (New Orleans, La., Ben Franklin) contributed eight digs. Brahm, Boddiford, Conkell and Blair Barrows (Atlanta, Ga., Holy Innocents') all had one block in the match.
In their second match of the day, the Tigers were swept by Mississippi College 3-0 (13-25, 12-25, 16-15).
Borchardt, Conkell, Boddiford and Tarver Shimek (Towson, Md., Towson) each had two kills. Brahm posted seven assists. Boddiford had ten digs and one block. Brahm, Boddiford and Shimek had one service ace each.
The Tigers are now 0-3 on the season and will wrap up play tomorrow at Birmingham Southern with matches against Huntingdon College (10 am) and Berry College (3 pm).
