MARYVILLE, Tenn. 9/1/10 – The Sewanee Tigers opened the 2010 volleyball campaign on the road tonight by dropping a 3-0 decision to the host Maryville Scots by scores of 25-7, 25-7 and 25-11.

In her college debut freshman Tarver Shimek (Towson, Md., Towson) contributed seven digs while playing through an ankle sprain suffered in game 2. Also, freshman Sally Mills (Columbia, S.C., Hammond School) chipped in six digs.
Sewanee first-year head coach Jessica Cortese said after the match, “Defense was our strong suit, evident in our 36 digs. It's great to play a team of Maryville's caliber so early in the season so we can see what we need to work on to be a more challenging team. We can hit the floor for practice tomorrow with a concise and detailed plan for improvement.”
The Tigers return to action this weekend as they travel to Birmingham, Ala. for four matches beginning with a 2:30 pm contest on Saturday against Rust College at Birmingham Southern College.
