Men's soccer drops SCAC match to Southwestern

Box Score

Southwestern University took just five minutes to get on the board Sunday afternoon, as the Pirates downed Sewanee in men's soccer action, 5-0, in Georgetown, Texas. The Tigers fall to 3-10-3 overall and 1-4-2 in SCAC play. Southwestern moves to 11-6 with the win and 8-1 in conference play.

Colin McCulloch got the Pirates on the scoreboard early, drawing first blood with a shot that sailed past Sewanee goalkeeper Freddie Delchamps. McCulloch's goal came off a corner kick pass from Tim Hord and with that, the hosts were ahead 1-0 at the 5:40 mark of the first half.

After McCulloch's goal, both teams remained quiet until late in the first period. With just under eight minutes left in the half, the Tigers found themselves on the defensive. Southwestern's Steven Resnik connected with a pass from Thomas Davis and put the ball in the net for the 2-0 lead. Less than four minutes later, Resnik picked up his second point of the evening, this time on an assist. Resnik hooked up with Southwestern's Timothy Eamma, Eamma put a shot past Delchamps and suddenly the Pirates led 3-0 heading into halftime.

The second half presented a quieter pace for both squads, as each team took just eight shots in the period. Southwestern, however, was able to make two of their shots count. Fernando Leon put the Pirates ahead 4-0 when his free kick found its way past Sewanee keeper Derek Williams for the score. Alex Keller added Southwestern's fifth and final goal of the evening with just over a minute to play when he connected with a pass from Tom Holleman and sent his shot past Williams.

The host Pirates tallied 22 shots in the contest while holding Sewanee to just 12. They also held the edge in corner kicks, eight to five. Delchamps picked up six saves for the Tigers in one half of play, while Williams added four saves in the second half.

Sewanee will wrap up the 2010 regular season next weekend when they head to Jackson, Mississippi for an SCAC match up with Millsaps on Friday at 8:00 p.m. The Tigers will then face the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern College in their regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
