Men's soccer drops 1-0 decision to Rhodes

Box Score BOX SCORE

Rhodes College picked up a goal midway through a tightly contested first half and never looked back, as the Lynx topped Sewanee in men's soccer action tonight, 1-0. The Tigers fall to 3-8-2 on the year and 1-3-2 in SCAC play, while Rhodes moves to 5-6-3 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

The Lynx and the Tigers came out battling in a physical first half. Play moved back and forth to both ends of the field for most of the period, but neither team was able to generate many chances offensively. Rhodes held the edge in shots, five to four, in the first period and each team earned one corner. The Lynx got a break first at the 28:29 mark, when Christian Kurth took a pass from Brett Simek and slipped it past Sewanee goalkeeper Freddie Delchamps (Helena, Ala., Indian Springs). Kurth's goal gave the Lynx a 1-0 lead that they would hold throughout the first half.

The two teams started the second half in much the same matter, battling back and forth from the sound of the whistle. Despite several patches of chippy play, both defenses held on and neither team was able to create many scoring opportunities in the period. The intensity reached a high in the last five minutes of the contest. Sewanee was able to attack the Rhodes goal several times, but just couldn't capitalize. The Lynx held on for the rest of the half and walked away with the 1-0 victory.

Sewanee finished the night with the edge in shots and in corners, eight to seven and four to one, respectively. Delchamps finished the evening with four saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Tigers return to action on Sunday when they host Hendrix College in another SCAC match up. The Warriors are 5-7 overall and 1-5 in conference play after defeating Oglethorpe 1-0 this afternoon.
