BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Sewanee opened its 2009 season at the Birmingham-Southern Invitational this weekend and after a 3-0 loss to Mississippi College, rallied for a 6-0 shutout of Blackburn College. The Tigers led 5-0 at the half.
Jackson Gannaway (Collierville, Tenn., Collierville) and
Garrett Schlosser (Nashville, Tenn., MLK) led the Sewanee effort on Sunday with two goals apiece.
Matt Lightfoot (Germantown, Tenn., Germantown) and senior
Henry Kiser (Marietta, Ga., Marietta) chipped in one goal each, also. Lightfoot also assisted on two goals.
Matt Hale (Ft. Worth, Texas, All Saints) and
Chris Grover (Collierville, Tenn., St. George's) split time in the goal for Sewanee to earn the shutout. Scott Hughes played all 90 minutes in goal for the Beavers.
Lightfoot's goal was first blood for the Tigers, followed by two more quick goals by Schlosser - All in the first 10 minutes of play. Kiser and Gannaway took the tally to 5-0 in favor of Sewanee before the break and then Gannaway added some more insurance with Sewanee's sixth goal in the 49th minute.
Sewanee dominated possession as a team as well, outshooting the Beavers 32-4. The Tigers earned six corner kicks compared to just one for Blackburn.
Sewanee is now at .500 with a 1-1 record and will host the annual Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational next weekend and will face off against Emory and Henry and Washington and Lee.
