SEWANEE, Tenn. - Centre surprised Sewanee 11 seconds into its SCAC men's soccer matchup with a Ben Van Nevel goal, but Sewanee rallied, going 2-0 for the remainder of the game to secure a 2-1 SCAC win and go to 2-0 in the league so far this year. The Tigers beat DePauw Friday night 2-1 in double OT. Prior to the weekend, Sewanee hadn't beat DePauw since 2004 and hadn't beat Centre since 2005.
Matt Lightfoot (Germantown, Tenn., Germantown) scored Sewanee's tying goal in the 12th minute of play and in the second half,
Stuart Maxey (Roanoke, Va., Salem) score the game-winner in the 86th minute. Both goals were unassisted.
Matt Hale (Ft. Worth, Texas, All Saints) and
Chris Grover (Collierville, Tenn., St. George's) split time in goal for the Tigers. Hale had four saves and Grover had six, compared to one save in goal by JC Spalding for the Colonels. Sewanee had eight shots and three corner kicks, while Centre had 17 shots and five corners.
Sewanee is now 6-2 and 2-0 in the SCAC. The Tigers will host Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps next weekend. Centre is 7-3-1 and 1-1 in the league.
