SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Sewanee hosted SCAC foe DePauw in its 2009 league opener and Ethan Schweir's field goal late in the first quarter for DePauw was the only score in a muddy, rainsoaked, defensive contest that ended up 3-0 in favor of Visiting DePauw.
DePauw held the ball for 39 of the 60 minutes and earned 14 first downs compared to three for Sewanee. Sewanee earned 30 yards offensively compared to 261 for DePauw.
Geoff Marolda (Houston, Texas, Houston Episcopal) punted 10 times for Sewanee and averaged an impressive 40.1 yards per punt. Jon Ellis led DePauw's ground game with 75 yards rushing, while
Michael Poarch (Chattanooga, Tenn., Tyner Academy) had 31 yards for Sewanee.
Defensively,
Alfonza Knight (Nashville, Tenn., M.B.A.) had a game-high 13 tackles for Sewanee.
Zac Atkins (Dallas, Tex., Lake Highlands) had eight tackles, while
Jeremy Character (Marietta, Ga., Wheeler),
Trey Reliford (Strawberry Plains, Tenn., Jefferson County) and
Karl Rogers (Tullahoma, Tenn., Tullahoma) had seven each.
Brient Hobbs (Chattanooga, Tenn., Ridgeland) sacked DePauw QB Michael Engle for a loss of 12 yards. Matt Johnson led DePauw with six tackles and a sack.
Sewanee is still looking for its first win and will play at Centre next weekend. DePauw is now 2-1.
