SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Sewanee hosted Hampden-Sydney in a rain-soaked home-opener and the visiting Tigers topped the Host Tigers 51-7 after leading 23-0 at the half.
After Hampden-Sydney jumped out to a 23-0 lead in the first half, Sewanee scored to open the third quarter as Sewanee QB
Robert Ratliff (Fort Worth, Texas, Nolan Catholic) connected with
Chalankis Brown (Millbrook, Ala., Stanhope Elmore) for a 46-yard touchdown play. Hampden-Sydney scored four more touchdowns following to secure the 51-7 final score. Brown also logged an interception and three tackles on the day.
Ratliff led Sewanee's passing game with eight completed passes on 18 attempts for 109 yards. Corey Sedler led HSC with 274 yards passing on 25 passes completed. Newcomer
Michael Poarch (Chattanooga, Tenn., Tyner Academy) led Sewanee's ground attack with 118 yards on 19 carries, while Kirk Rohle logged 123 yards rushing for Hampden-Sydney. Hampden-Sydney led in total yardage 494-214.
Defensively, former running back and senior
Trey Reliford (Strawberry Plains, Tenn., Jefferson County) led Sewanee with eight total tackles, while
Andrew Walters (Madison, Ala., Bob Jones) and
Alfonza Knight (Nashville, Tenn., M.B.A.) each had seven. Walters and Knight each broke up a pass, too. For hampden-Sydney, Jamar Lovelace and Andrew Sellers each had five tackles. Mikhail Walton intercepted a Sewanee pass late and ran it back 60 yards for a Hampden-Sydney final touchdown.
Sewanee is now 0-2 and will host SCAC foe \#20 DePauw next weekend. Hampden-Sydney is now 3-0.
