Sewanee Men’s Soccer Blanks Emory and Henry

BOX SCORE

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee men's soccer is hosting the 18th annual Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational this weekend and after Birmingham-Southern topped Washington and Lee 2-1 in the early match, Sewanee blanked Emory and Henry 4-0 in the late game. “It was a great win. We really need to give a lot of credit to our defense for cushioning Emory and Henry's attack,” added senior captain Patrick Johnson (Cleveland, Tenn., McCallie) after the game. Johnson scored Sewanee's second goal in the 50th minute unassisted.

Sophomore Matt Lightfoot (Germantown, Tenn., Germantown) scored Sewanee's first goal after 30 minutes of scoreless play off of a Daniel Drewry (Germantown, Tenn., Christian Brothers) assist to secure a 1-0 lead for Sewanee going into halftime. The Tigers scored three more in the second with goals from Johnson, Garrett Schlosser (Nashville, Tenn., MLK) and another by Lightfoot. Schlosser also assisted Lightfoot's second goal.

Sewanee outshot Emory and Henry 24-4 and took eight corner kicks compared to three for the Wasps. Chris Grover (Collierville, Tenn., St. George's) started in goal for Sewanee and logged three saves. Daniel Mills had eight saves in goal for Emory and Henry.

Sewanee (2-1) will continue play in the tournament tomorrow at 2 pm against Washington and Lee (0-1).
