SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee hosted Southwestern and Oglethorpe in men's tennis on Saturday and picked up a pair of wins to move to 4-1 so far in 2009. Sewanee beat Southwestern 8-1 and edged out the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe 5-4 after fighting for a 3-0 lead after the doubles matchups.
After falling behind 2-1 in the early match, Sewanee rallied, beating the visiting Pirates 5-1 in singles for the five-point win. In the nightcap, Sewanee fought hard for three doubles wins before Henry Litchfield (Oklahoma City, Okla., Heritage Hall) and Will Holloway (Augusta, Ga., Lakeside) pulled out singles wins to earn the five Sewanee points needed for the win.
"We had a couple of good wins today with our young team. The guys played hard and poise was the key word of the day," said Sewanee coach John Shackelford after the matches.
