MEMPHIS – Sewanee and Rhodes squared off in the annual Orgill Cup football game Saturday and the host Lynx topped the visiting Tigers 19-16 in overtime after being locked in a 16-16 tie after regulation. Rhodes takes the 28-27 all-time edge in the storied Orgill Cup series, which began in 1954. Sewanee retains the lead overall between the two teams 41-34-3.
After a pair of Geoff Marolda (Houston, Texas, Episcopal) field goals in the first quarter to give Sewanee the 6-0 lead, Rhodes rallied to get a Derek King TD reception from Brett Stoots that would give the Lynx the 7-6 edge that would last into halftime.
In the second half, each team got a field goal in the third quarter to enter the fourth with a 10-9 tally in favor of Rhodes. In the fourth quarter, Josh McMurray's touchdown run with a failed PAT gave Rhodes a seven-point edge. With just nine seconds left in regulation, Patrick Shelton (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) connected with Chalankis Brown (Millbrook, Ala., Stanhope Elmore) for a touchdown capped by a Marolda PAT to even the score at 16. In overtime, Rhodes got a field goal to go up 19-16 and Sewanee couldn't answer.
Sewanee had a 14-13 edge in first downs today and had a 232-229 edge in total offensive yards. Shelton led the Tigers with 172 yards rushing. Marolda led with 10 points on the day. Defensively, Jeremy Character (Marietta, Ga., Wheeler) led Sewanee with eight total tackles, including a sack.
Sewanee ends the season at 0-9 and is 0-6 in the SCAC. Rhodes is 3-7 and is 1-5 in the league.
