SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Saturday was Sewanee's annual Hall of Fame Game and the Tigers got up on the visiting Panthers 3-0 early on a
Geoff Marolda (Houston, Texas, Episcopal) field goal and then led 17-7 early in the third after a
Ben Cleveland (Ft. Worth, Texas, Trinity Valley School) touchdown run and a
Chalankis Brown runback. In the second half, a series of Sewanee turnovers set up 27 unanswered BSC points and the Panthers walked away with the 34-17 win over the host Tigers.
Birmingham-Southern had a slight edge in total offense 254-231. Sewanee picked up 11 first downs on the day, but the Panthers had 13.
Michael Poarch (Chattanooga, Tenn., Tyner Academy) led Sewanee with 74 yards rushing on 23 carries.
Patrick Shelton (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) threw for 137 yards, while Birmingham-Southern's Joe Thigpen threw for 69 yards and rushed for 65 to lead the Panthers.
On defense,
Zac Atkins (Dallas, Texas, Lake Highlands) led Sewanee with nine tackles and senior
Trey Reliford (Strawberry Plains, Tenn., Jefferson County) had eight.
Stuart Rast (Hapeville, Ga., Lovett) had an interception for Sewanee and four tackles.
Bakari Faulkner (Maysville, Ga., Jackson County) had three tackles for loss on the day, including two sacks. For BSC, Trea Strain and Dustin Massey each had seven tackles.
Sewanee is now 0-7 so far in 2009 and will host Millsaps next week before travelling to Rhodes on November 14. Birmingham-Southern is 4-3.
