SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Sewanee hosted Austin College in SCAC football play on the Mountain in front of a rain-soaked Homecoming crown and the Tigers fell to the visiting Kangaroos 31-21. Sewanee jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but Austin answered with a field goal in the first quarter and two touchdowns in the second for a 17-7 halftime edge. Michael Poarch's (Chattanooga, Tenn., Tyner Academy) second TD run of the day. In the third quarter, Austin scored a pair of touchdowns on a 65-yard interception return and a two-yard TD run. In the fourth quarter, Sewanee QB
Patrick Shelton (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) ran 28 yards for the final score of the game.
Austin gained 356 yards total offense and earned 20 first downs, while Sewanee was good for 186 yards and 10 first downs. Austin had the ball for 33 minutes compared to 27 for Sewanee.
Chuck Winfield (Jacksonville, Fla., Jacksonville Episcopal) led Sewanee's rushing yardage with 79, while Poarch had 59 on the ground. Shelton completed three passes for 21 yards. For Austin, Andy Braly rushed for 87 yards and completed 152 yards worth of passes.
Defensively,
Trey Reliford (Strawberry Plains, Tenn., Jefferson County) led Sewanee with 11 total tackles. Several Kangaroos had a team-leading seven tackles.
Geoff Marolda (Houston, Texas, Episcopal) punted eight times for Sewanee, with a long of 53 and four boots inside the 20 yard line.
Sewanee is now 0-5 and 0-3 in the SCAC. The Tigers will play at SCAC foe Trinity in San Antonio next weekend. Austin is now 3-2 and 1-2 in the SCAC.
