Sewanee Debuts with Win

FULTON, Mo. - Sewanee played at Westminster today and after trailing 14-7 in the first quarter, held the Blue Jays scoreless the rest of the game to pick up the 26-14 win.

In the first quarter, Trey Reliford (Strawberry Plains, Tenn., Jefferson County) opened the Sewanee scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 7-0. The Blue Jays answered with a pair of Carl Givens touchdown receptions from Ryan Evers to give the hosts a 14-7 lead at the end of the first.

In the second quarter, quarterback Patrick Shelton (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) (Hickory, N.C.) took a four-yard run to the house to even the score after the Andrew Gould (Chatsworth, Ga.) PAT. Gould would punch a field goal in the second, too, to give Sewanee a three-point edge going in to the half.

After the halftime break, Gould would increase Sewanee's lead with another field goal (he scored eight points on the day). In the fourth quarter, Andrew Gordon (Carrollton, Ga., Carrollton)for the Tigers would block a Blue Jay punt and newcomer Alfonza Knight (Nashville, Tenn., M.B.A.)took it to the end zone for one last Tiger touchdown, securing the 26-14 Sewanee win.

Sewanee earned 296 total yards while Westminster had 299. Reliford ran for 156 Tiger yards while Josh Wiltfong had 63 for Westminster. Shelton completed eight Sewanee passes for 84 yards. Evers completed 18 passes for 214 yards.

Defensively, Charles Lapeyre (Metairie, La., McCallie) led Sewanee with nine total tackles and Matt Moore (Charleston, S.C., Pinewood Prep) had eight. Stuart Rast (Hapeville, Ga., Lovett) and Tyler Brantley (Danielsville, Ga., Athens Academy)  each had seven. Rast also logged two interceptions on the day. Dustin Haynes had 13 tackles for Westminster.

The Tigers are 1-0 so far and will host Washington and Lee next weekend. Westminster falls to 0-1.
