2008 Football: Sewanee Falls in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sewanee traveled to Birmingham today for the first time in 22 years (vs. Samford, 1986) to play Birmingham Southern in the newly constructed Panther Stadium and fell to the host Panthers 49-0 after trailing 30-0 at the half.

Birmingham-Southern opened the game with a 10-point first quarter followed by a 20-point second for the 30-0 halftime tally. In the second half, the Panthers scored 19 more to secure the 49-0 score in favor of BSC.

Birmingham-Southern finished with 505 total offensive yards, while Sewanee had just 139. Sewanee had nine first downs on the day and the Panthers had 17. The Sewanee offense had the ball for 30:32 and BSC held it for 29:28.

Sewanee newcomer Zeke Wilson (Snellville, Ga., George Walton Academy) led Sewanee's offense with 41 yards rushing and QBs Brient Hobbs (Chattanooga, Tenn., Ridgeland) and Patrick Shelton (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) passed for a combined 50 yards.Tyler Brantley (Danielsville, Ga., Athens Academy) led Sewanee's defense with nine tackles.

The Tigers are 2-7 and are 1-5 in the SCAC. They will host Rhodes next weekend on the Mountain.
