SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee hosted Centre on the Mountain Saturday for Family Weekend and the Colonels disappointed a large Sewanee crowd by topping the host Tigers 28-16.
In the first quarter, Sewanee got out to an early lead on a 41-yard
Andrew Gould (Chatsworth, Ga., Murray County) field goal. Centre answered eight minutes later with 51-yard Tyler Osterman pass to Tyler Hinkel for a touchdown. In the second, Sewanee jumped back ahead of Centre with a four-yard
Patrick Shelton (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) TD run. Centre would gain a 14-10 lead for halftime, though, as Jonathan Pinque punched in a two-yard touchdown run.
In the second half, Centre kept the Tigers at bay, scoring two more touchdowns that bookended
Bruce Bentley (Lynchburg, Va., Virginia Episcopal) four-yard touchdown reception from Shelton. As time ran out, Centre held the 28-16 edge.
Centre gained 363 yards of total offense while Sewanee gained 232. The Colonels had 17 first downs, while the Tigers logged 12.
Shelton completed 18 passes for 172 Tiger yards and Osterman had 239 yards in the air. He also ran for 106 to lead the Colonel ground game. Defensively,
Chalankis Brown (Millbrook, Ala., Stanhope Elmore) led Sewanee with eight total tackles. Brian Sneed had 10 for Centre.
Sewanee falls to 2-3 so far and is 1-2 in the SCAC. Centre is now 3-2 so far this year. Sewanee will play at Austin next weekend.
