Dickie McCarthy completed 18 years with the University of the South, and he is in worked in an administrative role as Assistant Athletic Director of Internal Operations and Compliance for eight years. He retired from the University in a full-time capacity on Dec. 17, 2021.Â
In the summer of 2014, after his career on the hardwood was complete, he moved into Athletic Administration, serving as the department's Director of Internal Operations. He was elevated to Assistant Athletic Director in March of 2016.
Since moving to Athletic Administration, McCarthy has served as the Business Manager, leads the operations of the Fowler Center and serves as the game manager on football and basketball game days.Â
The 10th women's basketball coach at Sewanee, McCarthy led the Tigers for 12 seasons and 106 wins, making him the winningest coach in the program's history.Â
On Dec. 10, 2016, McCarthy secured his 100th career win with 79-70 victory over Berea (Ky.)
In 2005, McCarthy led the Tigers to the second most wins (19) in school history and was named the SCAC Coach of the Year.
Prior to his arrival on the Domain, McCarthy served at Springwood School in Lanett, Ala. Highlighted by a 1993 girls’ state crown (Alabama Independent School Association), his 13-year win-loss worksheet was 214-75 (74.1%). As girls coach for 10 years, his Lady Wildcats were 183-45, 80.3% with the one title, a pair of state runner-up finishes, eight Final Four and nine Area championships.  In his three-year stint as the boy’s coach, the Wildcats were 31-30 (50.8%) with one area title and repeat state tournament appearances in 1995-1996.
McCarthy played basketball at Sewanee for two years before transferring to the University of Georgia, where he received his bachelor’s degree. He was a member of the 1974-75 Tiger team that finished 20-7 and received a bid to the inaugural Division III NCAA Tournament.
McCarthy is married to the former MarthaLee Warner, and they have two children, Kelli and Dr. Daniel McCarthy, and six grandchildren, Drew, Ella, Lily, Hannah, Sadie and Suzanna.Â
