Mike McGhee

Former Sewanee Tiger running back Michael McGhee enters his second year on the football staff in 2025, serving as wide receivers coach and handling strength and conditioning for the program.

McGhee tutored running back and SAA Newcomer of the Year Dawson White during the 2024 season, with White rushing for 490 yards and four touchdowns along with 19 receptions and two more TDs. The Tigers averaged 145.2 yards rushing last year, which ranked third in the SAA.

McGhee finished his Sewanee career with 1,632 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns despite batting a host of injuries throughout his tenure with the program. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native carried 92 times for 415 yards and three touchdowns in 2021 and his best season was in 2022, amassing 812 yards on the ground on 153 attempts with seven TDs, averaging 5.3 yards per carry.
 
He earned Second Team All-SAA honors, finishing second in rushing yards in the league, including becoming just the second Sewanee player to rush for more than 200 yards in a game since 2012 with a 241-yard performance against Millsaps College. He was also voted to the SAA All-Sportsmanship Team after the season as well.
 
McGhee’s final campaign with the program in 2023 was cut short by a knee injury after four games.
 
He earned SAA Academic Honor Roll honors in each of his last four seasons with the program and was named to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society after this final year. Players are eligible for the Hampshire Honor Society by maintaining by a cumulative 3.2 grade-point-average or better throughout their college careers and starting or contributing heavily to the team.
 
He also received the 2023 C.R. Bickerstaff/Bill Pace University Scholar-Athlete Award from the middle Tennessee chapter of the National Football Foundation, presented annually to the top university football scholar-athlete in the middle Tennessee area based on scholarship, sportsmanship and value to the team.
 
McGhee was a Mr. Football semifinalist as a senior at Chattanooga Central High School, running for more than 4,000 career yards for the Pounders and earning Region Running Back of the Year honors as a junior and Player of the Year accolades as a senior.
 
He earned his bachelor’s in Biology on a Pre-Physical Therapy track with a minor in business from Sewanee in 2023.
