David Jenkins enters his ninth season as Head Baseball Coach at the University of the South, and he is the 12th baseball coach in program history. During his tenure at Sewanee, he has compiled an 84-172-1 record.
In eight seasons with the Tigers, he has coached 27 All-Conference honorees and three were chosen All-Region. In the classroom, he has been a part of 155 selections to the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Academic Honor Roll, and the program has achieved the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Award each of the last five seasons (2017-18-19-20-21).
In 2021, Sewanee entered the SAA Tournament as the 8-seed and traveled to top-seed Birmingham-Southern for the BSC Pod of the tournament. In the first game of the championship, the Purple Tigers took down the No. 3 team in the country at the time to advance to the winner's bracket.
Led by SAA Pitcher of the Year Logan Martin, who struck out 98 batters in 69.1 innings pitched, Sewanee had five members named to the All-SAA Team.
In the classroom, 24 student-athletes were honored on the league's Academic Honor Roll.
The Tigers, despite a global pandemic, were able to hit the diamond in 2021, and Sewanee's first game of the season was a memorable one. Led by Jake Pendergraft and Logan Martin's combined no-hitter over Covenant, 2-0, on March 19, it was the second no-no in history since 2011, according to acquired records. After achieving the ABCA Team Academic Award for a fifth season, 26 players were named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll.
Sewanee's 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Tigers recorded a 10-5-1 record with two walk-off wins against Dominican (Ill.) and Rose-Hulman (Ind.). A total of 28 student-athletes succeeded in the classroom, as the program set a new record for members to the SAA Academic Honor Roll.
The 2019 campaign saw history for Jenkins and the baseball program. For the first time in program history, spanning a century, the team captured a 20-win season and set a new school record in wins with 21. Additionally, the 21-19 record and the .525 winning percentage marks the first season above .500 since the 1985 season, when the program finished 18-17.
Jenkins saw four players named All-SAA and Riley Brandvold became the second student-athlete under Jenkins to earn an All-Region selection by the (ABCA) and Rawlings. 16 players were honored with the SAA Academic Honor Roll, and the team was honored with the ABCA Team Academic Award.
During the 2018 season, Jenkins saw four players named to the All-SAA Team. A record 20 student-athletes were selected to the SAA Academic Honor Roll during the season. Along with setting a new record for Academic Honor Roll members for the team with 20, they also achieved the ABCA Team Academic Award for the second straight season.
In 2017, Jenkins led to a 19-23 record and an appearance in the SAA Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. Jenkins led the Tigers to their first postsaeson victory since 1990 as members of the College Athletic Conference (CAC).
Tying the school record in wins, Sewanee secured its best finish to a season since the 2003 Tigers when they finished 19-21. He led one student-athlete, Drew Mancuso, to First Team All-Conference honors for the first time since 2012 and the first in the SAA-era. In total, five were named to the All-Conference Team, tying a program best since the inception of the SAA in 2013.
Additionally, Trey Akins was named as an ABCA/Rawlings All-Region performer.
In the classroom, 16 were listed on the SAA Academic Honor Roll, while the team was honored on the ABCA Team Academic Award for the first time.
The 2016 season saw four student-athletes garner All-SAA recognition, and 14 were named to the Honor Roll.
Jenkins led the Tigers to an 11-24 record in his first season in 2015. Under Jenkins leadership, Sewanee produced five All-SAA players. 11 were honored on the league's Academic Honor Roll.
Jenkins came to Sewanee from Shenandoah University, where he served as an assistant coach for seven seasons.
At Shenandoah, Jenkins helped lead the Hornets into the NCAA Tournament five out of the past six seasons.
While Jenkins was an assistant, Shenandoah was also the No. 1 seed in the 2014 ODAC Tournament and Demorest NCAA Regional. The nationally-ranked Hornets finished 2014 with a 33-11 record and final No. 16 ranking in the D3baseball.Com poll.
During his time, Shenandoah complied an overall record of 204-63 and finished with multiple top-five wins and regional championships.
Individually, Shenandoah boasted 27 all-conference selections, including three-conference player of the year winners. That included 2014 ODAC Player of the Year and two-time All-American, Michael Paul.
Prior to his time in Winchester, Va., Jenkins served as the assistant coach at Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, W.Va.
As a player, Jenkins was a four-year starter as an infielder and left the program holding school records for most games played, 164, and started, 163.
A two-time Virginia State Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State selection, Jenkins earned All-USA South honors after his freshman, junior and senior campaigns.
In his time as a coach, Jenkins has coached eight All-Americans and four that have played professional baseball. One of significance while at Shenandoah was Phil Morse, who was drafted in the 16th Round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft.
Jenkins received his bachelor's degree in Biology from Shenandoah in 2007 and earned a master's degree in Performance Enhancement & Injury Prevention from California University of Pennsylvania in 2012. He is married to the former Ashley McManamay, and they have two sons, Mack and Crew. Ashley works for the University of the South as the Director of the Sewanee Dance Conservatory.
