Longtime high school baseball coach Barry Vetter joins the Sewanee baseball staff as an assistant coach for the 2025 season and 37
th year in coaching at the high school and collegiate levels. Vetter has compiled a 488-232 overall record in 26 years as a head coach.
Vetter spent last season as the pitching coach at Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., in 2024, helping the Dragons to a 21-25 overall record, 18-14 in conference play, tying for the most overall wins since 2019 and the most league victories since before 2012.
Prior to his one season at Lane, Vetter worked as an assistant or head coach at the high school level from 1990-2023 at Shelbyville Central, Smyrna and Blackman in middle Tennessee.
He spent six years at Shelbyville, three as an assistant and three as head coach for the Golden Eagles. He moved to Smyrna for two seasons as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach for the Bulldogs in 1999.
Vetter reached the TSSAA State Tournament in 2007 at Smyrna with the help of former Vanderbilt hurler and Major Leaguer Sonny Gray. He spent 17 seasons as the head coach at Smyrna, posting a 321-252 record.
From 2016-17 he worked for Justin Entrekin as an assistant coach at Blackman, helping the Blaze reach the state tournament in 2017, finishing with a 29-12 record. He became the head coach at Blackman in 2018, mentoring Drew Beam, former University of Tennessee hurler.
Vetter played one season at Martin College in Pulaski, Tenn., as a pitcher and middle infielder before pitching one year at Roane State Community College in Harriman, Tenn. He spent his final two years of college as a pitcher at Middle Tennessee State for head coach John Stanford and assistant coach Steve Peterson, working as a graduate assistant for Peterson after the completion of his playing career.
He compiled a 3-3 mark with two saves in 23 appearances and 39.0 innings, striking out 37 as a junior, and posted a 7-0 record with three saves and a 3.90 ERA in 22 games with five starts as a senior, tossing 67.0 innings and striking out 43. His 10-3 career record is tied for third all-time in the record books for the Blue Raiders.
Vetter earned his bachelor’s from Middle Tennessee in HPERS in 1989 and a master’s in Recreation in 1994.
